Background of the Study

Disarmament programs are critical tools used to address the proliferation of illegal weapons and to promote peacebuilding in conflict-prone areas. In Niger State, particularly in Kontagora LGA, the rise in armed banditry and violent clashes between various groups has necessitated the implementation of disarmament initiatives aimed at reducing the circulation of small arms and light weapons. These disarmament programs are often part of broader peacebuilding efforts to create a safer environment for communities and facilitate reconciliation among groups in conflict.

The effectiveness of disarmament programs, however, is often debated. While they can reduce the immediate threat posed by armed groups, the success of these programs in fostering long-term peace and stability is not always guaranteed. In Kontagora, where the impact of armed violence is still evident, the ability of disarmament programs to rebuild trust among communities and support sustainable peace remains unclear. This study will examine how disarmament programs in Kontagora have influenced community peacebuilding and whether they have contributed to lasting stability or merely provided a temporary solution to armed conflict.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the implementation of disarmament programs in Kontagora LGA, violent conflicts continue to persist in the region, suggesting that these programs may not have fully addressed the underlying causes of violence. The challenge lies in the ability of disarmament efforts to integrate former combatants into society, rebuild community trust, and foster long-term peace. There is limited research on how disarmament initiatives specifically affect community peacebuilding in Kontagora, and this study aims to assess their effectiveness in contributing to sustainable peace.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of disarmament programs in promoting community peacebuilding in Kontagora LGA.

  2. To assess the role of disarmament programs in reducing armed violence and fostering social reconciliation.

  3. To explore challenges faced in the implementation of disarmament programs and propose recommendations for improvement.

Research Questions

  1. How effective have disarmament programs been in promoting community peacebuilding in Kontagora LGA?

  2. What role do disarmament programs play in reducing armed violence and fostering reconciliation in the region?

  3. What challenges hinder the successful implementation of disarmament programs in Kontagora LGA?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Disarmament programs have a positive impact on community peacebuilding in Kontagora LGA.

  2. Disarmament programs contribute to a reduction in armed violence and improve security in Kontagora LGA.

  3. Challenges in the implementation of disarmament programs hinder their effectiveness in fostering long-term peace in the region.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the period  and will specifically examine disarmament programs implemented in Kontagora LGA. Limitations may include difficulties in accessing data from participants in disarmament programs and the challenges associated with the security situation in the region.
